Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda BreedingChengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

The Chengdu Research Base is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1987 and is dedicated to wildlife research, captive breeding, and conservation education.  Unlike many of the other Giant Panda facilities, the Chengdu Base is located just 6 miles from Chengdu’s city center. Currently the Chengdu Base covers about 260 acres, but is currently under expansion and will eventually cover about 495 acres.

The Chengdu Base was opened with 6 Giant Pandas that were rescued from the wild and is proud to be able to say that they have not taken any more pandas from the wild. Currently the Chengdu Base has 83 Giant Pandas; all through their captive breeding research program. To ensure genetic diversity and the overall health of the pandas, the Chengdu Base works with many zoos and research facilities around the world.
